Deir el-Qamar, once the capital of Mount Lebanon, now a typical Lebanese village, with its historical center, old market, museum, churches & mosques.
BEIRUT
BEIRUT was settled more than 5,000 years ago. Its name derives from the Canaanite-Phoenician be’erot (“wells”), referring to the underground water table that is still tapped by the local inhabitants for general use.
Located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon’s Mediterranean coast, BEIRUT is the country’s largest and main seaport.
The city became a hotbed for commercial, financial, touristic and artistic activities, and downtown Beirut became once again Lebanon’s beating heart and a center of leisure and entertainment with a wide choice of international restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques.
BEITEDDINE
BEITEDDINE (name translating as “House of Faith”) is located 45 kilometers southeast of Beirut, near the town of Deir el-Qamar.
There, Emir Bashir II of the Shihab dynasty, who became later the ruler of the Mount Lebanon Emirate for more than half a century, started building the palace in 1788 and moved in by 1811.
He ruled from Beiteddine Palace that became the best example of the 19th century Lebanese architecture, with its decorated ceilings, colorful marble mosaic floors & harem suites.
DEIR EL-QAMAR
DEIR AL-QAMAR meaning “Monastery of the Moon” is a village in south-central Lebanon, 5 kilometers outside of Beiteddine, consisting of stone houses with red-tiled roofs.
During the 16th to 18th centuries, DEIR AL-QAMAR was the capital and the residence of the governors of Lebanon.
It is also notable for its 15th-century Fakhreddine Mosque, Fakhreddine II Palace, and other historical palaces.
